Mount Vernon Nazarene University - Giving back to the Community

by Sam Miller

Mount Vernon Nazarene University
Giving back to the Community

Mount Vernon Nazarene UniversityStudents at Mount Vernon Nazarene University are dedicated to helping their community.

Mount Vernon is lucky to have 2,000 plus students who are actively participating in local homeless shelters, outreach programs, and mentoring activities. The university’s mission promotes respect for others, positive influence and a commitment to giving. These Christian values gave rise to these great locally beneficial programs

“Friendsheep” where students are paired with residents of a nursing home. They read, listen, and play with elders to brighten their day.

“One Way” is a great program that promotes student talents in music, drama, and story-telling. The students perform around the community.

“Mandate” servers with urban ministries to raise awareness of urban issues. Small groups travel to inner-cities on the weekends to help with different organizations.

“Pumzika” raises awareness of homelessness by working with a variety of social service organizations and forming relationships with guests of Mount Vernon’s homeless shelter, “The Sanctuary”.

“Transition Mission” pairs students with developmentally delayed high school students to interact with.

Lastly, “Bookworms” trains college students by the Education Department to go to Columbia Elementary School to help kids learn how to read.

There are many more great opportunities, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University is just another reason why Mount Vernon is such a special town. The community is supported by each other, with many opportunities for involvement and growth. Ice in Knox County Ohio

by Sam Miller

Knox County and Central Ohio have experienced their first significant ice storm of the year.  Freezing rain started hitting our deck around 11 p.m. last night and it must have continued through most of the night because when I woke up this morning everything was covered in ice.  All of the local public schools are officially closed for the day and from what I saw on the television news channels this morning it looked like the majority of the Central Ohio schools have closed for the day as well.

There is currently a serve weather alert and a winter storm warning in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday night according to the Weather Channel.  Today we are expecting what is known as a "Wintry Mix" and freezing rain is expected again this evening.

If you are staying warm at home today and would love to make a move be sure to browse our available homes at knoxcountyohio.com

Mount Vernon Ohio Building Fire

by Sam Miller

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — A commercial building located at 201 South Main Street on the corner of Gambier Street caught fire this morning between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m.  This building is the location of Bodi N Balance Fitness and it was previously the location of Focus Studio and Ben Franklin.  The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the building and spread through the building and eventually flames penetrated the roof.  The fire department has been doing everything they can to contain the fire and minimize the damage to the newly renovated Mount Vernon Nazarene University Art Center which is located next door.

We are trying something a little different with our blog today...we are providing the Knox County Ohio real estate market update in video format.  Today's market update highlights 3 different topics:

  1. Foreclosure Moratorium and the potential good and bad a moratorium can create.
  2. Current fixed interest rates that are available for both 15 year and 30 year loans.
  3. We continue to maintain our level of business while many others are selling less.

Please let us know if you like the video blog concept and if enough of our visitors like it we might start adding short video updates to our text blogs.  And one final thing...at the very end of the video for some reason I ended up cutting off my office phone number so here is the complete number (740) 397-7800.

Knox County Ohio Real Estate Has A New Look

by Sam Miller

We have had a goal to update the design of our knoxcountyohio.com real estate website for the past couple of years and last week we made that goal a reality.  We wanted a faster functioning website that would enable visitors the freedom to view homes in more ways than ever before.  Visitors can now search for listings based on new listings, communities, price ranges, school districts, bank owned, vacant land, commercial listings and they can still view all of our active real estate listings in a single grouping.  We hope you enjoy the new knoxcountyohio.com

Forbes Magazine recently featured Kenyon College in their latest issue as one of "The World's Most Beautiful College Campuses".   The Village of Gambier is truly a gorgeous community with tree lined streets, spectacular Gothic architecture, walking paths and river scenery.  The Gambier community is adjoined by a picturesque landscape of country property and farmland.  Kenyon is one of the nation's finest liberal arts colleges.

As a Knox County resident and real estate professional, it makes me very proud that Kenyon College received this well deserved recognition from Forbes Magazine.  Because of the Forbes article, I am sure others will discover the beauty of the Kenyon College Campus.

Rockwell family, the grounds of this school are simply stunning!!  Twin Oak has some of the latest and greatest technology found in Mount Vernon.  It features an impressive computer lab and utilizes several large interactive smart boards.  If you haven't personally had a smart board experience, you and your children are in for an educational treat.
