The largest of the six elementary schools in the Mount Vernon City School district, Pleasant Street boasts a big facility with a separate building for both the cafeteria and gymnasium. Students at Pleasant Street Elementary have access to a variety of extra-curricular activities and clubs. For example, first through fifth graders are invited to run for the Pleasant Street Student Council. Fourth and fifth graders may play on the intramural basketball team or join the orchestra. Fifth grade students can try out for the Pleasant Street “Battle of the Books” team, the Pleasant Street band, or join the Safety Patrol. Pleasant Street Elementary offers accelerated math and reading programs to help challenge gifted students. Since Pleasant Street has the largest elementary student population in Mount Vernon, students learn early on how to interact with their peers despite differing socioeconomic backgrounds.
